Gorgeous as Sin

Title: Gorgeous as Sin
Author: Susan Johnson
Publisher: Penguin Group
Publication Date: March 2009
Classification: Adult Romance Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge, Historical Romance Challenge
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Fitz Monckton, Duke of Groveland, has never encountered a woman he can’t seduce—until he clashes with the beautiful Rosalind St. Vincent, whose bookshop sits in the way of Fitz’s lucrative development deal. If money won’t entice Rosalind to sell her shop, Fitz must tempt her in other ways—hopefully mutually pleasurable, and profitable to them both.

My Thoughts:
Fitz who is the Duke of Groverland wants to desperately see his new project build. He wants to build on property that was all recently owned by shop owners, one by one they all sold their shops to Fitz so he could rebuild in the area. There is one person standing in his way with a little corner bookstore. Rosalind owns said bookstore and she is very unwilling to sell, for her it is not about the money but what she does for the community with her little bookstore. After Fitz’s men have had several failed attempts at gaining her store from her Fitz decides to take matters into his own hands. Fitz has never met a women who he couldn’t easily get his way with but the quick tempered Rosalind is going to show him just who is the boss, spoiled rich boys must not always be able to get their way no matter how good looking they are.

This story started out a little rough for me and I almost put it down. At the beginning the story was a little hard to understand, the writing although filled with beautiful word usage was just too much for me. Not every little thing needed to be described in such long fluffy language. I know that the style of writing fit the time period since this is a historical romance but it felt like work reading it. The first steamy scene between the main couple was just filled with so many words and frankly I was losing patience.

Then suddenly I don’t know what happened but the writing got much easier to read, it became much more enjoyable. Honestly, I read textbooks for school all day so at night I’m looking for an easier read and finally this historical romance was becoming the cute easier read that I was expecting. I did like the characters when they were having their witty back and forth rival over who would end up with the bookstore. I have always enjoyed when the characters are sarcastic and strong and can keep up with each other. It made for a great dynamic between the characters.

Overall I really did enjoy the characters although sometimes I felt they almost did a 180 in their emotions. The storyline was rather predictable but most romance stories are. In the end I did end up liking the storyline and I was happy for the way the book ended even if I did see it coming. I would give this book 4 stars and I will be looking for the next book in the series called Sexy as Hell.

The Demon Trapper’s Daughter

Title: The Demon Trapper’s Daughter
Author: Jana Oliver
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Publication Date: Feb 1, 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on…

Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps.  The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.

But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood.  And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

My Thoughts:
Riley is just a normal teen trying to live her life and help her dad make ends meat as much as possible. Her mother had passed away a few years before and her father is buried in medical bills. Riley’s dad just happens to be a great demon trapper though. The Blackthorne name is known by all, even the demons are starting to call out to Riley when they see her. These demons shouldn’t actually be aware of who Riley is but they seem to know her even though she is just starting her demon trapper career. To make matters worse the other trappers are not very happy to have Riley as part of the team, no girl has ever been allowed to become a trapper before. This is an unsettling thought to have everyone, even the demons, against you when you are just starting out. With the help of Beck, her dad’s demon trapping partner, and Simon, her sweet boy next door crush, Riley will have to pull together to fight the demons that have taken everything away from her.

Where do I even begin with this story, the beginning had me hooked because I have always enjoyed stories where the girl is set up to lose but is pulling through to show men that women can handle just as much as they can. So basically Riley starts off this kick-ass girl that anyone would start to side with. Along the way we meet Beck, Simon, Paul, and several demon trappers who really bring this story to life. The book is told in a way that is great for older teens to read because there are some serious themes going on throughout the story, including jokes that older teens and adults would better understand.

Now here is where I meet a huge road block in the story’s plot. Yes, Riley is a demon trapper which means we are going to get the heaven and hell talk but honestly I think it went way too far. Not only do we get the heaven and hell story we get constant prayers to God in the story and our male love interest is very intense in his faith in all things good and holy. Flat out I’m not at all religious but I can usually handle hearing a little bit about it but at certain points this book just took it way too far. At times the story feels like a preach about God and believing that he will help and angels and how demons are evil and to avoid any tempation. Ugh is my thought about the over indulgence in the topic of God.

After trying so hard for chapters and chapters, pages after pages of the words of God I was able to mostly put that aside and start to enjoy the actual storyline. Once one is paying attention to the action going on in the book one will realize that there is not much point. There are a lot of secrets throughout the book that will leave you reading just to figure them out, by the end we don’t really have much of an answer other than hey stick around for book two.

Overall I loved some of the characters in this book, they really were what kept me reading all the way till the end. Beck in particular is my favorite, he has his slow country ways to fool people into thinking he has no clue what he is doing. However, he is there for Riley all the time even when she doesn’t think she needs his help. He is a great character and if you read this book for any reason he is it. Infact, he might be the only reason that I might just pick up the second book when it does come out. I would say I’m very much on the fence about this book, some of the characters and their strong relationships were great to read about but some of the storyline dragged for me. I would give this book 3.5 stars.

Need

Title: Need
Author: Carrie Jones
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Publication Date: December 2009
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge, YA Series Challenge
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Zara collects phobias the way other high school girls collect lipsticks. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.
Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.
With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has all the elements to keep teens rapidly turning the pages.

My Thoughts:
After Zara’s stepfather dies she is sent to live in Maine with her Gram. When she arrives in this new place she is a bit out of her element, this new place is so cold and it is also full of secrets. While one man keeps following her, Zara also has to deal with two boys taking an interest in her. Ian is the overachiever who wants to help Zara fit in at a new school. Nick is the hot bad boy at school who tires to keep his distance from Zara, yet he is always there to save her.

This story starts a little slow but soon the story grabbed by attention with these mysterious two boys and the mysterious dealings going on in Maine. Zara although she has her fears she is strong in her own unique way. Watching her try to figure out just who Ian and Nick are is a big part of the beginning of the storyline. With the help of Devyn and Is, Zara will start to figure out the strange things that keep happening in the town. Such as why boys keep disappearing and why everyone keeps finding gold dust in the woods surrounding Zara’s home.

This story will shock you in parts as you begin to wonder just who Zara’s biological father really is. Also we begin to wonder just why Zara’s mom sent her to live with her Gram and what is her mom hiding from. The romance between Zara and Nick will draw you in. The romance was the right combination and for me it really worked out well. I loved learning about all the different types of creatures in this book and the pixie’s history. These pixies are a dangerous bunch who will not stop until they get exactly what they want, their queen.

Overall I would give this story 4 stars, it was going to be 4.5 stars but the writing at times could’ve used some more editing and I wanted some of the conflicts in the story to last longer. Also the story reads a little like Twilight in the beginning and although that was a great book we don’t need copy-cats of it. The dark elements in this book really drew me into the story but those dark moments were quickly turned to light. I would have loved to see a bit more of the darker sides of the book last longer. I did like the story though and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Will Work for Prom Dress

Title: Will Work for Prom Dress
Author: Aimee Ferris
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Publication Date: February 8th, 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge, 2011 Contemporary Challenge
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Quigley Johnson has, reluctantly, given up the rest of her last year of high school to take part in her best friend Ann’s Betterment Plan, which will turn them into the best-dressed, most sought-after, most admired girls at their senior formal. Because – hey – who doesn’t want the perfect prom, complete with a dream dress and a devastatingly handsome date?

My Thoughts:
Quigley and Ann are best friends who would love to go to prom together. They just need to come up with some way to get money for their dresses. Ann’s mom is a huge fashion designer but she tends to wait to the last minute to finish dresses if it is for the two girls. This year they have decided that they will not wait around for her to make them dresses, they will buy their own. Through a very odd string of jobs and their plan, known as the betterment plan, these girls will try to get everything they want in time for prom.

This story was a little boring for the first half of the novel. There really wasn’t a whole lot going on and I couldn’t seem to connect with either character. Quigley is the calm one, she is an artist but she can’t keep any of her grades up. Ann is the wild one who also happens to be smart, although you would never be able to tell because she is only concerned with making her mother’s life miserable and finding as many boys as possible to date before prom. So the only saving grace in the character/plot department came when the girls get a job working as models for Ann’s mom. They meet two great guys there who are designers, they were basically the only likeable characters in this book.

The ending was the most exciting part of the whole book, it did have that cute ending that I was happy about but getting there was a bit slow. I am happy about the way the book ended but I guess I was just expecting something more from the story. With the book world overcome by paranormal novels I wanted to fall back into my old love of contemporaries but this book just didn’t have the right flare for me.

Overall I would give this book 3.5 stars. The first half of the book didn’t impress me but at least I got a cute ending out of the story.

Touched by an Alien

Title: Touched by an Alien
Author: Gini Koch
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA)
Publication Date: April 2010
Classification: Adult Sci-Fi Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
How can a sexy marketing manager join forces with an Alpha Centauri male in Armani to save the planet-using hairspray, a Mont Blanc pen, and rock n’ roll? Easy… She’s Touched by an Alien Marketing manager Katherine “Kitty” Katt steps into the middle of what appears to be a domestic dispute turned ugly. And it only gets uglier when the man turns into a winged monster, straight out of a grade-Z horror movie, and goes on a killing spree. Though Kitty should probably run away, she springs into action to take the monster down. In the middle of the chaos a handsome hunk named Jeff Martini appears, sent by the “agency” to perform crowd control. He’s Kitty’s kind of guy, no matter what planet he’s from. And from now on, for Kitty, things are going to be sexy, dangerous, wild, and out of this world.

My Thoughts:
When this book starts the reader is thrown right into the action, usually this doesn’t happen in books. Normally there is a long lead up to learn the characters and the setting before anything major happens. Well that is not the case with this book, at first it was a little difficult to follow just because so much was happening and so many new characters to learn. Plus in the beginning you have to try to keep up with Kitty and our aliens as they explain some huge background information. The beginning reads really fast and at first I wasn’t a huge fan for the first 70ish pages.

As soon as those first background parts were over and I understood the characters better I really started to enjoy the story. We get to see Kitty as she teams up with an agency of extremely hot alien men to save the world from superbeings, basically the bad aliens. I easily got wrapped up with the action, romance, humor that was happening at every turn. Whenever I would put this book down I immediately wanted to sit back down to read. I found myself thinking about the storyline and characters every minute that the book wasn’t in my hands.

I fell in love with Kitty and Martini, trust me read the book and you will see why any woman with a pulse will fall for Martini. *fans self* Seriously, I’m a V girl all the way (V from JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood), he has always been my favorite male character. But let me just tell you Martini is giving him a run for his money. I just loved the chemistry between Kitty and Martini, they both are smart, sarcastic and ready for anything at anytime. I loved the witty dialouge between Kitty, Martini and Christopher. Sign me up for a position at the agency because I certainly want to get myself one of those hot aliens.

Overall I give this book 5 stars because already I am on edge and impatiently waiting to have time to read the second book in this series called Alien Tango. Run to the store to get this one, I’m not usually a sci-fi type of person but I will gladly gobble up any books in this great series. Even if you aren’t a big sci-fi nut you need to go get this book. Plus the cover art is gorgeous so even if you do nothing but stare at that it will be worth it.
