Demonglass

Title: Demonglass
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Publication Date: March 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, 350+ Page Challenge

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch. That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

My Thoughts:

In this story we start out with Sophie wanting to go with her dad so that she can go throught the removal to get her powers removed. Her dad does not agree right away to let her remove her powers but asks that she come with him to London for the summer to fully understand the weight of her decision. Sophie agrees to go only if Jenna, her vampire best friend, can go with her, her dad agrees and also informs her that Cal will also be coming with, he is her fiance after all. Upon arrival at a mansion in the London countryside Sophie quickly comes to a hault when she mets two other demon children, Nick and  Daisy. Sophie thought her dad and herself were the only demons around but she has already been proven wrong and the day has only just begun.
As exciting as this mansion is Sophie wonders exactly what she is suppose to spend the summer doing. Her dad easily keeps her busy by having her study from books on demon history, but keeps avoiding all of her questions about the other demons. Things get exciting when her dad asks her to break into a magical case in the library to get the book that the case is guarding. In this book is the spell that will allow anyone to bring a demon to life. This is the spell that made Sophie’s great-grandmother a demon in the first place. The only problem is that the pages that contain the spell have been torn out of the book. Things do not get really excited until Sophie has another run in with Archer, who works for The Eye, while at a night club. Will the passions be reunited or was Archer playing her all along?
I have to say the storyline was different in this book and the story moved away from the Harry Potter elements. When I had read Hex Hall I wasn’t overly impressed because it seemed like a story we have heard before but I felt Demonglass did step it up a bit. The story now reads a little like the Evernight Series but Demonglass is a bit different. This story turned up the action by bringing more mystery and of course more romantic tension between Sophie and Archer. I wanted to see more of Cal and in Demonglass the reader does get to see more of his personality but I feel that next to Archer his personality falls flat. I like the dynamic between Sophie and Archer because they have that witty banter that I personally love.
Overall I really did enjoy this story more than Hex Hall. I felt more connected with the characters and I felt Rachel did step up the storyline. There were many twists and turns with an old rival by the former Council leader thrown in. I love Sophie because of her great personality and I mean this book made a pop culture reference to my favorite movie, The Parent Trap, so how could I not like it. I can not believe how this book ended though, we were left in the middle of some major action and I’m already dying for the next book. I want more Sophie, Archer, Jenna, and Cal and I want to find out what happens to this great group of characters, as well as what happens with this all out war that the group is involved in. Overall I would give this book 4.5 Hearts.

Waiting on Wednesday (1)

This is a great weekly theme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine to show off the books that we are looking forward to that haven’t been released yet.
So this is my first ever WoW post but I figured there are many books that I’m looking forward to so I would like to spotlight them week after week.

This week I’m looking forward to…

Summary:
Bobbed hair. Short skirts. Cool jazz. Dark speakeasy. Anything goes. Meet the flappers, Gloria, Clara, Lorraine . . . and the rich young boys who love and loathe them.

Release Date: August 9th, 2011

Why I’m Excited for this Book:
This is the second book in the Flappers series, the first book was Vixen. I read an advanced copy of Vixen back in Nov and I loved the story and the characters. Sometimes I feel that YA doesn’t really handle the historical time period that well but Jillian proved me wrong. I loved the mix between the past elements of the roaring 1920s, the jazz, the booze, the romance, and the mystery. Plus Vixen left on a huge cliffhanger so I have already been dying for Ingenue since even before Vixen hit the shelf in Dec 2010.

Hex Hall

Title: Hex Hall
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher:  Hyperion Books for Children
Publication Date: Feb 2011 (paperback edition)
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

My Thoughts:

Sophie does a few harmless spells in every state that she moves to with her mother. Even though the spells are not really usually hurting anyone she gets sent to Hex Hall for reform. This place is not a fun boarding school, it is one where witches, shapeshifters, faeries, and one vampire go to learn stuff out of boring textbooks instead of actually studying and using real magic. The school starts to get to Sophie quickly as she learns that her classmates hate her father, and for a good reason. How on earth is Sophie suppose to get along with all of these people for the next two years until she is 18 and can officially leave?

Wow this book starts off screaming Harry Potter! Really Sophie is going to a boarding school that originally only allowed witches in. It was once a grand place for witches to go to actually learn about their powers before it became a boarding school for all of the “freaks” who can’t keep control of themselves and their magic. There is a headmaster, a groundskeeper, and some of the characters have names that are copy cats of characters in Harry Potter. At first I really didn’t want to continue because lets face it no one can pull of Harry Potter, over time I slowly started to get past that fact though. Slowly the story started to change in small ways and Rachel Hawkins even makes a joke at one point that Hex Hall’s groundskeeper is nothing like Hagrid.

Overall I would say that I enjoyed that this was a newer version of a series that everyone loves. Rachel made it her own and it worked. Sophie has this quick wit that I just love and it kept me laughing many times. She has a great friend in the vampire Jenna who is getting blamed for some murders and accidents around Hex Hall. Archer is our bad boy warlock and of course Sophie gains a crush on him quickly even though he is dating the enemy, Elodie. The cast of characters is great and I can’t wait to learn more about the young hot groundskeeper named Cal. The story was good with a few good twists and turns and I will continue on with this series. I would say the only thing that annoied me in this story other than the Harry Potter story plot rip off in the beginning of the book was the fact that at one point Sophie claims she is in love with Archer. Yes, he is hot and he cares for Sophie but I don’t like when authors pull the love card out of the hat so quickly. They aren’t even dating yet she says she loves him which for me I know that doesn’t happen that way in real life. It is just one of my pet peeves whether it is in my YA novels or in my Adult Romance books. Overall I give this story 4 Hearts.

Fun Friday Quote: The Countess

Happy Friday Everyone!
This week’s fun quote comes from an adult romance book but I promise the quote is clean. It is about a man named Richard proposing to Chrissy.

Christiana brought his words to an end by covering his mouth with her hand. When he frowned around her fingers and raised his eyebrows, she signed and said, “Dicky made- I mean George. George made me many promises before we married about the wonderful husband he would be and the glorious life we would have together… and he broke every one. I would rather you not make promises, my lord. Lies are easily spoken. Actions are really more telling.”
“Very well. No promises,” Richard agreed when she let her hand drop away from his mouth.
~ Pages 119-200~
~ The Countess by Lynsay Sands~
This is one of those profound moments like with the Entice quote I posted two weeks ago. Actions do speak louder than words. I hope you enjoyed this quote and if you like historical romances I would suggest picking this one up.

Want to Join Pages of Forbidden Love?

Well the point has finally come where I feel that my blog would run better if I had some more reviewers.
After all more reviewers would be able to offer up different opinions and add more content to Pages of Forbidden Love.
I do have a couple things that I would be looking for in reviewers on my blog.
1 ~ I want to keep this blog in the same genre that it is now, this means I’m looking for someone who reads one or more of these categories, YA, Adult Romance, or Urban Fantasy. If you happen to read some Sci-Fi novels that would also count.
2 ~ You would need to be able to read and review at least 2 books per month. Plus you can help keep the blog posts rolling by doing weekly memes or just promo posts/ things that you find interesting in the book world.
3 ~ If you have another blog I ask that what posts and reviews you do on Pages of Forbidden Love are not just copies of what you are posting on your blog.
4 ~ Also I ask that you do not use Pages of Forbidden Love just for your want of getting ARCs. What do I mean by this? I mean please do not just jump onto tour sites or start asking authors or publishers for books to review because you have joined a site that has been up and running for almost 8 months. Once you have put some hard work like I have into the blog then by all means you can say you review for Pages of Forbidden Love and start jumping on ARC Tour sites.
I will not be providing you books to read, if every once in a blue moon I have an ARC or review copy and you want to read it then sure I will consider mailing it to you but please do not count on me as a resource for books.
Overall I’m a bit OCD and a slight perfectionist, so I expect a lot. I’m also scared to even ask another person or people to join Page of Forbidden Love because I want to know I can count on the person/people. If you are trustworthy and fit the things that I’m looking for in a reviewer then please send a sample review and a bit about yourself in an email to me at apk1princess(at)live(dot)com.
Please know that I appreciate anyone who wants to join me in this blogging adventure. If I get any people wanting to join me I will read over the emails I might get and decide if I will add more people to this blog or not.

Entice

Title: Entice (Need #3)
Author: Carrie Jones
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Publication Date: Dec 2010
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself, A-Z Challenge, YA Series Challenge
Summary from Barnes and Noble:

Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together forever. But that’s not quite how things have worked out. For starters, well, Nick is dead. Supposedly, he’s been taken to a mythic place for warriors known as Valhalla, so Zara and her friends might be able to get him back. But it’s taking time, and meanwhile a group of evil pixies is devastating Bedford, with more teens going missing every day. An all-out war seems imminent, and the good guys need all the warriors they can find. But how to get to Valhalla? And even if Zara and her friends discover the way, there’s that other small problem: Zara’s been pixie kissed. When she finds Nick, will he even want to go with her? Especially since she hasn’t turned into just any pixie. . . She’s Astley’s queen.

My Thoughts:
So this is the third book in the Need Series so at this point all of the characters are established and each has come into their own. We start the story off knowing that Nick has almost died and that he has been taken to Valhalla. Valhalla is the gods area where they keep warriors that they have saved from death in order to help with this all out war (end of the world) that is suppose to happen soon. We also know at this point that Zara has turned into a pixie, a queen pixie actually so that she is strong enough to save Nick. The problem is that she is Astley’s queen and there are many secrets that she doesn’t know about him, can she trust him is a huge question in this story.

Astley and Zara start on the quest to find out how to get to Valhalla to save Nick. Each time they travel they gain more pieces of the puzzle and they feel that they are getting closer to the rescue which is great news. Things start to go off the charts though when Astley is keeping secrets and all of these leads start conflicting with each other and nothing seems to be working out right. In the background the evil pixies are still taking boys from the town and killing them because they have the “need”, so at this point there is about two different stories going on.

Honestly, I did enjoy the first book in this series because I liked this idea of evil pixies and I thought it was a little bit of a darker paranormal story and I surprisingly liked that. With the second book I was still interested because the focus was still on the pixies and how they were evil but when the god/valhalla thing came into play I was starting to get skeptical about where this series was heading. I had to continue on though because I needed to know if Nick was still alive and if Zara was going to be able to save him. So I mean there is good backstory but I feel the bottom fell out in Entice. The beginning, well actully 3/4th of the book was mostly just boring backstory that wasn’t all that important in my opinion. It isn’t until the last 75 pages that the story picks up because Zara must go to Valhalla to get Nick and fight for his life.

Overall I found most of this story to bore me to the point I almost completely put it down. Don’t get me wrong I do love stories that explore gods and myths and all of that stuff but I feel that the story has just taken drastic turns from where we originally started. I find that this is happening a lot with YA books especially the paranormal kind. It is almost as if the authors get bored half way through or they decide they like other paranormal creatures better so they change the story. Starting with evil pixies and ending with stories of gods and not really explaining the complex pixie society didn’t really work for me. I feel that Carrie Jones needs to go back and explain the pixie life better since Zara is now a pixie, plus I feel the characters are completely different than they first where. Yes, they did grow up but Dev has become a bit of a jerk, Cassidy has healing powers all of sudden, and Is freaks out over everything to the point that it is annoying. I just feel the whole world of this storyline has gotten out of control and off track. I’m still going to read the fourth book because I’m hoping that Carrie pulls the story back together so that it all flows easily again. So for this book overall I would give it 3.5 Hearts.

New Fantasy Novel: Ravenwild

Hi Everyone, today I thought I would showcase a new fantasy novel written by Peter J. Plasse and illustrated by Michael Longenecker.
Here is a short summary of the book:
Returning home from another grueling shift of E.R. work, Dr. Blake Lee Strong comes across a downed motorcyclist and stops to help, but little does he know that his world and that of his family will soon be turned upside down. Duped into being transported to another planet called Inam’Ra, Dr. Strong and his family are thrust into a medieval world populated by Trolls, Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves, Humans and other alien beings. An epic odyssey begins as the Strong family fights for not only their own survival, but also for the continued existence of the citizens of Ravenwild.
If interested in seeing more, on the Ravenwild website you can read the first two chapters.
I read chapter one and I already feel hooked to this medieval fantasy adventure. The closest thing I could think of as I was reading to compare it to is James Owen’s series about dragons which starts with Here, There be Dragons. So Ravenwild sounds like a great adventure that mixes elements from the present and past along with great fantasy elements.
If interested in purchasing the book it is currently up for sale at the Ravenwild website.
I have also been informed by Michael that the book is soon going to be made into an ebook for the Kindle and on Smashwords. The book is also going to soon be more widely available in paperback and hardcover once the distribution rights are signed in the coming weeks. So I would say keep an eye on this epic fantasy novel, I know I will.
