Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.
And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case–but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother–who has supernatural gifts of his own–becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?
Clarity, known as Clare to her family, has always been called a freak for her gift. She can touch an object and get visions from the people who have last touched that object. Her gift is rare and it makes her special but the people at school don’t see it that way. Clare is a loner with very few friends, she mostly hangs out with her older brother Perry and his friend Nate. One morning a body is discovered in their small tourist town and everything starts to become a little off kilter. The town is in a state of panic and it will take the work of the police, the new detective and his hot looking son Gabriel, and Clarity’s visions to help solve the case.
I instantly liked this book, Clare was a great character from the start and I felt that I related to her in many ways. She is a bit of a loner in life and she doesn’t have many people to turn to for help. She has a great brother-sister nagging relationship with her older brother and an ex-boyfriend named Justin who won’t seem to give up on her. When Clare has to help the police solve this case of the murdered tourist she starts to doubt all of the people around her. Her brother Perry is the top suspect because he was with the girl right before she was murdered, Clare knows she has to clear his name but she doesn’t know how many secrets she can keep from Gabriel, who she is working on the case with.
This book was short at only about 250ish pages and the story flowed nicely. I enjoyed the entire cast of characters all for different reasons. Clare was someone I felt I could relate to, Perry was the sweet older brother but he is a male so you know how much trouble they can get into, Gabriel is the new bad boy in town with a dislike for people who claim to have visions, and Justin is sweet as he tries so hard to win back his ex-girlfriend Clarity. Since there was such a large cast of characters even I was second guessing myself on who the killer was. I do have to say I was a little surprised in the end on just who was killing the people in town.
Overall I did enjoy the story and any book that keeps me guessing and reading is one worth keeping. I don’t want to give too much of the story away because that would ruin the mystery. I just want to say one last time that the characters really made this story come to life, I also enjoyed the love story between Clare, Gabriel and Justin. I can completely understand how Clare feels about each guy and the ending of the story leaves us to wonder just who she will pick. It is always hard to choose between the bad boy and the sweet ex-boyfriend. I can’t wait for book two in this series so I can know who Clare picks and how her story continues. I would give this book 4.5 stars.
