Between the Lines

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
When Hollywood It Boy, Reid Alexander, arrives on location to shoot his next movie, his goals are the same as always—film another blockbuster hit and enjoy his celebrity status to the fullest while doing so. His costar is a virtual unknown with whom he had blazing hot chemistry during her auditions. The universe is lining up nicely to grant whatever he wants, as usual, until he’s confronted with unexpected obstacles on location like a bitter ex-girlfriend and a rival for the first girl to spark his genuine interest in years.

Emma Pierce just got her big break after more than a decade of filming commercials for grape juice, department stores and tampons, and more recently, bit parts in made-for-TV movies. Nailing the lead role in a wide-release film sent her agent, father and stepmother into raptures, and should have done the same for her. The Problem? Emma is experiencing a building desire to be normal, and starring in a silly, modernized adaptation of one of her favorite novels—opposite the very hot Reid Alexander—isn’t going to advance that aspiration.

Graham Douglas doesn’t fear playing the part of a nerdy dimwit; when it comes to choosing film roles, if it pays, he’ll do it. Besides, his friend Brooke Cameron snatched up the role of the bitchy hot girl and could use his help as a buffer, because her ex is the star. Graham has no problem keeping a handle on the situation, until he finds himself attracted to Reid’s costar, Emma, the girl Reid is pursuing full-throttle with his standard arsenal of charm, good looks and arrogance.

My Thoughts:
Since the summary of this book does such a great job I’m just going to say directly what I think. This book is actually told in opposite view points, on one hand the readers see exactly what Reid is thinking and on the other is Emma’s point of view. This makes the story interesting in the beginning because I for one always love to see things from the guy’s point of view. It is not often in YA books to actually be in the head of the main male character so I did enjoy this aspect of the storyline. So overall the beginning of the storyline really drew in my attention because I wanted to learn more about Emma and a possible romance that she would have with her hot co-star Reid.
In the middle of the book is where I really started to have my doubts about where the whole concept of the storyline was going. It felt like everything was slowly falling apart in the characters’ lives and there was an all time low feeling. To add to the misery that the characters were putting themselves through I really was starting to hate the fact that half the book was in Reid’s perspective. While in the mind set of Reid all the reader ever really gets in the middle section of the book is a stereotypical male attitude, plainly put, he wants to sleep with every girl in sight. This means he has stopped taking Emma’s feelings to consideration and he is just the type of guy that girls always plan on avoiding. While all of the drama is happening with Reid, Emma is having her own drama with her best friend Emily and the fact that Graham has kissed her and seems more than friend material. Yes my fellow lovers of YA romance, the love triangle strikes yet again. However, like most love triangles I only really liked one male character of the two leading males, I’m sure you can guess who that is since I’m not a fan of Reid’s attitude.
While the middle really started to sag for me the ending is what really pulled the whole experience up. I really started to enjoy some of the lessons that the teens in the story were learning. Valuable lessons such as figuring out what exactly you want in a guy that you are dating, who is right for you, and major life choices. Sometimes even if you feel something for a guy that doesn’t mean he is the right guy for you. I felt that the teens were making some of the mistakes that I made when I was in high school and I learned a great deal from my mistakes so I was very happy to see the characters struggle and yet find themselves in all of the drama that was going on. In high school many things make it seem like the world is going to end and sometimes you don’t realize until you are older that the world isn’t ending over every little piece of drama that goes on.
Overall, I might have had my ups and downs with Between the Lines but I felt the story stayed true to teenagers. Every teen will make mistakes and learn great life lessons along the way. As every adult knows, sometimes you have to go through years of mistakes in order to change to become a better person by learning from those mistakes. Plus I really did like Graham, (maybe this was also because he was in the 20-21 age range and that is my age so I felt connected with his calm approach to life amoungst the drama of the teens) and Emma. Overall if you want to remember some of the times you had in high school or if you are still in high school, looking for a contemporary romance I suggest you read this one, it gets 4 hearts from me.

Waiting on Wednesday (13)

This is a great weekly theme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine to show off the books that we are looking forward to that haven’t been released yet.

Summary:
The Legend of Beka Cooper gives Tamora Pierce’s fans exactly what they want—a smart and savvy heroine making a name for herself on the mean streets of Tortall’s Lower City—while offering plenty of appeal for new readers as well.

Beka and her friends will face their greatest and most important challenge ever when the young heir to the kingdom vanishes. They will be sent out of Corus on a trail that appears and disappears, following a twisting road throughout Tortall. It will be her greatest Hunt—if she can survive the very powerful people who do not want her to succeed in her goal.

Release Date:
October 25th, 2011

Why I’m Excited
Finally, the third book in Beka Copper’s series. I really do like the whole Tortall series and this particular part of the series happens before the other books do in the timeline. My complaint is that the cover looks really weird. The girl is looking over her shoulder but at such a weird angle that it seems unnatural, maybe they will fix that before it releases.

Vampire Knight Volume 2

Title: Vampire Knight Volume 2

Author: Matsuri Hino
Publisher: Shojo Beat
Publication Date: May 2007
Classification: 18+ Manga
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Goodreads:
Yuki and Zero go into town to do some shopping for the Headmaster, and they are attacked by a fiendish vampire called a “Level E”. Two Night Class students, Takuma Ichijo and Senri Shiki, come just on time and slay it, and invite Yuki and Zero to their dormitory at midnight to find out why they killed one of their own kind…

My Thoughts:
I thought the first volume of this series was good but this second volume wasn’t as good as the first, in my opinion. In this volume we already know that Zero is struggling with the fact that he is a vampire. Zero’s old Vampire Hunter Master comes to town in order to kill Zero, or at least threatens to kill him. Zero is so broken down in this volume over being a vampire that he almost lets his master hurt him. Yuki just can’t stand the thought of Zero being so down that she offers to help him in any way possible even if that means he has to drink her blood.

While all of the drama is going on with Zero we also learn more about the level of vampires. We see some more of the Night Class and learn more about the order of who has the power in terms of the vampires. Obviously purebloods are at the top and they are the only ones who can make humans turn into vampires. Kaname, who Yuki has a crush on, naturally is a pureblood vampire who although he hasn’t shown love for Yuki yet you can tell he cares about her. One of the best parts of this volume for me is when Zero’s master asks Kaname why he didn’t kill Zero and Kaname replies that he doesn’t want to hurt/lose Yuki. So we can see some romance starting between Kaname and Yuki.

Overall there were some good parts in this volume having to do with Zero’s struggle and Kaname’s feelings for Yuki starting to show. However, this mostly felt like a filler volume to just tell us some more background information about the night class vampires. I’m still looking forward to volume three because I feel the foundation is laid out now so we can move forward with the ultimate storyline. Overall this volume of Vampire Knight gets 3.5 hearts from me.

Introducing my Co-Blogger…

So I have been wanting to find a co-blogger for my blog for about 3 months. I find it really hard to trust people that I don’t know that well to help me out with something that I have devoted almost a year of my time to. So I decided what better than to have a person I trust help me with my blog.

So I decided, and it wasn’t easy, to have my boyfriend help me with my blog.

Now I will turn it over to him so he can tell you a little bit about himself.

Well hello people of the book blogging world! My name is Johnny. I have known Alexa for quite some time and she is a grand person and what better person to have a blog with. I am excited to be a part of her blog as she considers it to be her baby and her pride and joy. I am a college graduate with a double degree (history and writing). I am currently just trying to find a new job because working where I do at the moment does not seem to cutting it. I figured that this is almost a saving grace because it entitles me to become part of something larger than I could have ever imagined it to be. In the year that Alexa has invested on the blog, it has grown by leaps and bounds. In the coming weeks, you, the loyal followers, shall experience something new on Pages of Forbidden Love. Trust me, it shall be a treat.

On behalf of Alexa, the master of the blog, I, Johnny, the loyal apprentice, we invite you to spread the word. Spread it like a wildfire and lets have us some fun.
Cheers!

Luminous

Title: Luminous
Author: Dawn Metcalf
Publisher: Dutton Childrens Books
Publication Date: June 30th, 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
As reality slips and time stands still, Consuela finds herself thrust into the world of the Flow. Removed from all she loves into this shifting world overlapping our own, Consuela quickly discovers she has the power to step out of her earthly skin and cloak herself in new ones-skins made from the world around her, crafted from water, fire, air. She is joined by other teens with extraordinary abilities, bound together to safeguard a world they can affect, but where they no longer belong.
When murder threatens to undo the Flow, the Watcher charges Consuela and elusive, attractive V to stop the killer. But the psychopath who threatens her new world may also hold the only key to Consuela’s way home.

My Thoughts:

Consuela is just an average teenage girl who is struggling with social life and how her body looks when all of a sudden she faints in a dressing room at a department store. She gets up and is perfectly fine except she discovers when she gets home that she has a lump on the back of her head. This leads her to just want to take it easy that night by relaxing in a bubble bath. While she is in the tub she pushes on the bump on the back of her neck and discovers that she can put her fingers through the bump and touch her spinal cord. As she explores this new trick more closely she realizes that she can entirely take off her skin and be just bones surrounded by an aura. She then goes out to the world where no one can see her to help save a boy before he kills himself. As if that wasn’t enough drama already going on in the first 30 pages, Consuela soon is summoned to the Flow by the Watcher in order to start her new job as a guardian angel of sorts. Her new job requires her to save people from dying who are important to the world.

Phew can we say that the beginning of the book alone has a ton of different things going on. A big problem I had in the beginning was just being generally confused on what was going on. What is this place called The Flow and how exactly did Consuela end up being somewhat dead so that she can be in The Flow? To make matters worse the people such as the Watcher, Tender, Wish and V who all live in the Flow don’t understand their own world well enough to explain it to Consuela (Bones as she has been knicknamed for obvious reasons). Which means as the reader since Consuela doesn’t know a lot, by turn you also don’t know/understand a lot. Then further on there is a mystery plot thrown into the mix with a little bit of a romance between Bones and V. Since all of the main characters are dying, I personally had trouble connecting with the book. How can I connect with anyone when everyone is dying before I can really learn who the heck they even are.

Overall I had really high hopes going into this book but as the pages I read continued to go up my interest went down. The best way I can describe this novel is to say it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. It seems that although the idea of the flow was original it was not carried out well. The world seemed like something made up while taking drugs and I couldn’t bring myself to finish the book due to the lack of understanding about the Flow and the fact that all the characters were being murdered. When you have a limited scope world you can’t go around killing half of those limited 7ish people. Otherwise you are not left with much, plus Vishous from the BDB series by JR Ward is named V so I had strong hopes for this V but he never really pulled it together for me and I was 2/3rds of the way done with this book when I had to stop. Overall this book gets 1 heart from me because I didn’t finish the story and because I was expecting so much more.

Waiting on Wednesday (12)

This is a great weekly theme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine to show off the books that we are looking forward to that haven’t been released yet.

Summary:
Quill prevails when the strong survive. Using this notion as the core of their society, the people of Quill partake in a yearly ceremony, wherein children at the age of thirteen are divided into three categories–the Wanteds, the Necessaries, and the Unwanteds. Wanted children will move on to schooling and training to join the Quillitary and fulfill their roles in maintaining an efficient life for all, while Necessaries will take on farm work and similar duties. Any child who has shown a propensity toward emotion or creativity is deemed Unwanted, and sent for elimination. Thirteen-year-old Alex tries his hardest to be stoic when his fate is announced as Unwanted, even while leaving behind his twin, Aaron, a Wanted. Upon arrival at the destination where he expected to be eliminated, however, Alex discovers a stunning secret–behind the mirage of the “death farm” there is instead a place called Artime, where every Unwanted child has been welcomed by a man named Mr. Today. Artime is a special place full of art, music, theater, and magic, where each child is taught to cultivate their creative abilities and learn how to use them magically, weaving spells through paintbrushes and musical instruments. Everything Alex has ever known changes before his eyes, and it’s a wondrous transformation. But it’s a rare, unique occurrence for twins to be separated between Wanted and Unwanted, and as Alex and Aaron’s bond stretches across their separation, a threat arises for the survival of Artime that will pit brother against brother in an ultimate, magical battle.

Why I’m Excited
I have yet to read a book by Lisa but I’m excited for this book. I have been to book signings that Lisa was at and I have heard her read the beginning of this book. The whole concept behind the story sounds great and I can’t wait to see it all come together. This will be more of a middle grade book but I think that anyone will be able to enjoy the story.

Wildefire

Title: Wildefire
Author: Karsten Knight
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Publication Date: July 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Every flame begins with a spark.
Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

My Thoughts:
Most of this review probably will not make a whole lot of sense because I just feel so many different things for this book. First off the beginning starts off with a big bang, full of action. Then all of a sudden our leading character is in a different place 8 months later and new characters and pieces of the story get slowly added. I do mean slowly added with very little plot actually happening in the whole beginning of this book. There are a few pieces of action here and there and of course we find out about the Gods and Godesses part of the story but not much is every really explained during this whole novel. Let me paint a picture for you….

You know those story webs that you made when you were little and first learning how to write? It has the main idea in the middle and everything such as the setting, characters, and plot branch off of that one idea. Well this story felt like all of the basic elements were there, good characters with a kick-ass heroine, a love interest early on, the paranormal aspect and the mythology, in a middle of no where town where anything can happen. Sounds great doesn’t it, however if you pay close attention you will see I talked about the characters, the love interest, and the setting but, the plot is missing from what I described!!! How can you have a book with no plot? Very carefully is what I have learned, and Wildefire never really has a full plot until the very end. It has pieces and glimpse of plot lines that will never come together to make sense until the end of the story. Trust me I almost gave up on this book halfway through because I kept sitting back and waiting and waiting to see where the storyline was going to go.

Even with everything I just said about the beginning and middle of the book it was really the end of this book that threw me for the biggest loop yet. The ending actually had me crying yet getting excited and giddy about what was happening! It was like everything in a way paid off because the ending was really something, and yet in the back of my mind I still know that getting there was a rough road with very little plot and in fact a lot of the plot is still unasnwered. It was like this book was one giant opening to another book (I hope there is a sequel to this book because now I’m sucked into this world and I have NEED to know more!).

Overall, I honestly don’t even know what to say, I had a love and hate relationship with this book yet I can’t deny that it left me emotionally involved. I love books that get me emotionally involved and this hyped up about the storyline yet I had some major issues in how the book got to the amazing ending. I’m at war with myself on how I feel about this book. I know that while reading the beginning I almost gave up, does an amazing ending fix all the bumps and bruises experienced in the beginning of the book? Well I’ll let you be the judge, pick up Wildefire when it comes out in July and please I’m begging you come back and tell me what you think because I’m still at odds with myself on this particular book. Overall I’m not giving this book a heart rating because anytime I even think about the story I hover anywhere between 3-5 hearts on Wildefire.

Black Bird Volume 4

Title: Black Bird Volume 4

Author: Kanoko Sakurakoji
Publisher: Shojo Beat
Publication Date: May 2010
Classification: 18+ Manga
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Despite the constant danger Misao finds herself in, she’s determined to stay by Kyo’s side no matter what happens. But a chance meeting with one of Kyo’s best friends shows her just how hard a human-demon relationship can be. Tadanobu, heir to the Kitsune clan, gave up everything to be with his human girlfriend. But now he is being forced to take on the clan leadership and abandon his love—and it’s all Kyo’s fault!

My Thoughts:
In this volume we continue the romance between Kyo and Misao with the continuation of the steamy romantic scene that was at the end of volume 3. They get interupted though in order to learn about the Senka Roku (the book that tells all about the marriage between the clan leader and his bride) from a captive they have from the battle in volume 3. What they are told is that Misao will be perfectly fine if Kyo sleeps with her. But then again this captive only ever read the first half of the book that details this union.

Soon Kyo is reconnected with his old best friend, Tadanobu who is Shultei’s older brother. Since the death of Shultei, Tadanobu is now the leader by default. Tadanobu never wanted to be the leader of his clan which is why he let his younger brother take the leadership role. See Tad wanted to be able to be with his human girlfriend Renko. Now that he is clan leader he has to try to get Misao just like all the other clan leaders. Misao is valuable for her blood afterall and now Kyo and his best friend Tad will have to fight against one another.

Overall, once again the art work is just amazing and it might be my favorite manga art so far even though I haven’t read many manga novels. The storyline in this one will really break your heart at turns because you feel bad for Tad and you start to realize that Misao and Kyo’s decisions are affecting more than just themselves. Misao, Kyo, Tad, and Renko are going to have to step up to these new challenges to figure out just how to solve the problems that are going on. Plus Tad might just have more information for Kyo on the Senka Roku that might just change the course of things. All these characters also must keep in mind that they are swarn enemies and shouldn’t be friends with each other. Overall I give this story 4 hearts because I’m still interested in the great artwork and the good storyline that is starting to develop.

Mini Challenge #1
  • Favorite book-movie adaptation: I’m not a big fan of books being made into movies but I guess my favorite would be Harry Potter. They do a great job with the location and all of the magic.
  • Least favorite book-movie adaptation: NEW MOON!!! Twilight could be called as ok-good and Eclipse was actually quite good but New Moon just entirely fell apart, it was corny and didn’t at all reflect the actual book.
Mini Challenge #2

I guess I read about a lot of vampires. The reason Zero and Yuki are pretty big is because I have a ton of reviews coming up for the first five volumes of the Vampire Knight Series.

Mini Challenge #4

What is the favorite thing you have read today?
Well I only read City of Ashes today so I guess that would be my favorite.
Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
I really liked making the wordle today.
What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
Lol honestly I love the excuse to give to my parents and my boyfriend on why I need to be left alone to read. They seem to be respecting the whole read-a-thon thing so far.
What has been your LEAST favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
This doesn’t really have anything to do with the read-a-thon I just hated going to work today and missing out on a lot of reading time.
Are you on track to meet your goals?
Not really, I wanted to read three books in these two days and so far I’ve only read 209 pages.
Will you be participating tomorrow? Do you have any new goals?
I will be joining in again tomorrow and I would like to have about 2 1/2 books done. City of Ashes is a good book but it is kind of long. Honestly, tomorrow I hope to get a lot of reading done since I don’t have to go to work.
Mini Challenge #6
I would take Brittany from Perfect Chemistry and Henry from the Luxe Series and pair them together. I wouldn’t want them to be romantically involved I just think Brittany has the sort of attitude that would whip Henry into shape for a different woman. Anyone who has read the Luxe Series knows that Henry could have used with a strong woman forcing him to realize his mistakes and help him make better choices to fix them.
Mini Challenge # 8
I’m with Enna on being very ocd when it comes to my books. I would organize them by the author’s last name and then by the series number by that author. If the author doesn’t have a series I will organize them by title.
Mini Challenge #11
This one is a hard one since there are so many worlds and time periods to live in from books. I think I’m gonna have to go with the world that JR Ward has created in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by hot sexy vampires all the time and the compound!
Saturday Report/Finish Line
First of all, give us an end-of-read-a-thon status update. Books read, pages read, you know the drill!
Saturday 7pm Arizona time 8pm MST
Total Books Read: 2 1/2
Total Pages Read: 751
Books Read Since Last Update: 0
Pages Read Since Last Update: 80
Total Time Read: 10 1/2 hours
What is your favorite book you read during the read-a-thon?
I only read three different books but I would have to say I enjoyed City of Ashes the most.
Did you participate in any mini-challenges? Which ones?
Yes I did they were #1,2,4,6,8, and 11
Which mini-challenge was your favorite?
I really enjoyed #6 where I had to stop and think about two characters from different books that I would put together in a story.
What has been your favorite thing about the read-a-thon?
All of the reading that I got done, other than that I really liked the mini challenges.
Are you satisfied with how much reading you got done? Did you do more than you expected? Less?
I expected to get a little bit more reading done but with all the stuff going on with my truck this weekend plus working I didn’t get it all done. I am still happy with what I got done though since it is more than I would normally get done in two days time.
What did you think of the updates? Too close together? Didn’t like the time limit?
I did like updating but I felt they should maybe be every four hours instead of every two. Sometimes I had to pull myself away from the book when it felt like I had just gotten started. Plus once I’m away from the story it takes me then 10ish minutes to center myself in the world again. So while I did love updating and seeing how everyone else was progressing I wish the updating was a little more spaced out to allow more time for reading.
If you could change one thing about the read-a-thon, what would it be?
Maybe make it an extra day or have it more on the weekend instead of starting on a Friday when most people are at work. (It was still a great read-a-thon though)
Would you participate in another read-a-thon hosted by Squeaky Books? Why or why not? (Again, I won’t cry if you say “no”)
Heck yes I would, the mini challenges were fun and we had a great group of people reading throughout the two days.
Any last comments on the read-a-thon?
Big thanks to Squeaky Books/Enna for hosting this great read-a-thon. I would even love to help out in any way that I could for the next one, if there is a next one. Or even just donate a book for a giveaway for one of the mini challenges where there wasn’t a giveaway. Thanks again Enna, I enjoyed my very first read-a-thon. :)

Vampire Knight Volume 1

Title: Vampire Knight Vol 1

Author: Matsuri Hino
Publisher: Shojo Beat
Publication Date: Jan 2007
Classification: Manga
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Cross Adademy is attended by two groups of students: the Day Class and the Night Class. At twilight, when the students of the Day Class return to their dorm, they cross paths with the Night Class on their way to school. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu are the Guardians of the school, protecting the Day Class from the Academy’s dark secret: the Night Class is full of vampires! Yuki Cross has no memory of her past prior to the moment she was saved from a vampire attack ten years ago. She was adopted by the headmaster of Cross Academy, and now works alongside Zero to guard the Academy’s secret. Yuki believes that vampires and humans can coexist peacefully, but her partner has different ideas…

My Thoughts:
As you can probably tell by the cover this is another manga book. This actually happens to be a pretty popular series from what I have heard so I was excited to dive right in and see what all the fuss was about. This story in particular is about Yuki who attends a private school after the headmaster took her in because she was attacked by a vampire. Her partner in protecting the school and monitoring the day class from interfering with the night class (which is entirely made up of vampires), is a guy by the name of Zero. At Cross Academy the big thing is that the day class must not know that the night class is made up entirely of vampires and that Yuki and Zero are there to protect the human students. The leader of the night class/vampires is a guy by the name of Kaname who is special to Yuki because he saved her life when she was a little girl.

As we all know vampires have been done over and over again but since this was only the first volume in the series you don’t get to learn much about the vampires. The story really centers around Yuki and Zero which I have to say I really liked Zero. The artwork for his character is simply stunning (I’ll post a picture below so you can see what I’m talking about). Zero has a big secret that he has been keeping from everyone for four years though and his secret is about to be blown.

The artwork for this manga is good, the only art that really rocked my world was some of Zero’s images and the chapter covers where you get to see Yuki posing with all of the vampires of the night class. What really stood out to me was the flow of the story. I had just read a manga before this where the storyline was a bit choppy so this one revived my belief that I was going to like manga. I did like how the storyline flowed and there was a good story plot introduced in this first volume. The only thing in the story that I didn’t like was that the author repeated the lines about the day class not knowing that the night class is made up entirely of vampires. I don’t need to be told this 5 different times in order to understand this fact.

Overall I thought the storyline, story flow and artwork were all good so I would give this volume of Vampire Knight 4 hearts.
