Watchmen

Title: Watchmen
Author: Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
Publisher: DC Comics
Publication Date: April 2005
Classification: Adult Graphic Novel

Summary from Goodreads:
It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach. But is Rorschach really insane or has he in fact uncovered a plot to murder super-heroes and, even worse, millions of innocent civilians? On the run from the law, Rorschach reunites with his former teammates in a desperate attempt to save the world and their lives, but what they uncover will shock them to their very core and change the face of the planet! Following two generations of masked superheroes from the close of World War II to the icy shadow of the Cold War comes this groundbreaking comic story — the story of The Watchmen.
My Thoughts
What can I say that has not already been said about the Watchmen?
Ever since I was a small child, I was engrossed in the mythical and fantasmical world of comic books. In the comic book lore, there was always two opposing forces; the good guy and the bad guy. A hero would go under many different names and take on different shapes; Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America etc,… And with said hero’s, they would come complete with their own rogue galleries and with that, an arch nemesis would be their main purpose for being; The Joker, Lex Luthor, The Green Goblin, and the Red Skull, respectively. Now that is all fine and well as the clear distinction between good and evil would be a solid line, but what if that line were to be blurred? What if the hero’s were more real than ever before and would not be the victim of a radioactive spider bite or an alien from a dying world? What if they were human beings, fighting ‘the good fight’?
Human beings are finite and flawed characters, by their own definition. They are not the big blue boyscout (ala Superman), as they can be corrupted and essentially, hurt, right down to their very core. That is the story of the Watchmen.
The Watchmen presented the idea of a superhero in a new light; with a refined sense of realism. The story begins in 1980′s America; The Cold War has reached new levels and the doomsday clock is slowly counting down to midnight. Upon that eerie time, the world would cease to be.  Upon the point of divergence, which seperates 1983, with the real world, the events of World War II, Vietnam, the Cold War and the Nixon Administration seem to shape the world in a different and darker way. The hero’s are now outlawed as they are considered to be vigilantes and fugitives from the law. One man lives in defiance of that notion and acts as the main storyteller; Rorschach.
Rorschach is unlike any character I personally have ever encountered in all my years of reading comic books. He is more human than human. He is so dark and ominous that his very presence is chilling, but it is known to the readers that he serves a distinct purpose. That purpose is made very apparent by the end of the novel, but I will not spoil the suprise for anyone wishing to read this epic tale.
The other characters which are in the story are as unique and interesting as Rorschach. Dr. Manhattan is that world equivalent to Superman. He exists in the world but is not truly there as he is everywhere and nowhere at once. He is incapable of dying and can traverse the realms of the universe at a whim. The Comedian is my second favorite character, after Rorschach, as he is so much of a bad ass, for the lack of a better term. He holds so much importance to the story that I would not be able to describe it without giving away key plot points. Ok ok, he dies and that is how the story begins.
The story begins as a detective story, as it would seem that one by one, the hero’s are being murdered. The plot thickens when it is revealed that things are not as they appear to be. The comic is, which was seperated into 9 different issues, is filled with so many twists and turns and never lets the reader be given a chance to become complacent with the events. There is always something new and the way the story is presented is unique unto itself. There is newspaper clippings that are inserted within the story and seems to further the plot. There is also a metaphor within the story; a watch. I cannot seem to come to terms with how to accurately portray that piece of the story, but I would suggest that people pay close attention to all details involving the instances of watches.
Upon its full release, The Watchmen helped to redefine how superheroes are portrayed in the comic book world. This complete graphic novel has the dubious honor of being on Time Magazine’s list of of 100 greatest novels. Now that is a feat in itself. To say that this novel is a treasure would be an understatement.
The writing is flawless and the story seamlessly flows together in a symphonic-esque way. I feel a bit disappointed in myself as I cannot seem to come up with the proper wording to describe this novel aside from one; brilliance.
This is a must read for anyone; comic book fan or not.
WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?

Waiting on Wednesday (19)

This is a great weekly theme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine to show off the books that we are looking forward to that haven’t been released yet.
Summary:
If someone hurts your sister and you’re any kind of man, you seek revenge, right? If your brother’s been accused of a terrible crime and you’re the main witness, then you banish all doubt and defend him. Isn’t that what families do? When Mikey’s sister claims a boy assaulted her at a party, his world of work and girls begins to fall apart. When Ellie’s brother is charged with the crime, but says he didn’t do it, her world of revision, exams and fitting in at a new school begins to unravel. When Mikey and Ellie meet, two worlds collide. Brave and unflinching, this is a novel of extraordinary skillfulness and almost unbearable tension. It’s a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all it’s a book about love – for one’s family and for another.
Release Date:
This one has already been released overseas but it is coming to the US on September 13th, 2011.
Why I’m Excited:
This one really does sound great. I have always enjoyed stories where a girl claims something happened at a party and then people have to decide what is real and what isn’t. Sometimes the girl is telling the truth about being raped and sometimes she isn’t so it is always a slight mystery to solve. Plus the two people falling in love who are on opposite sides of the battle? Sounds interesting!
What are you waiting on?

Half-Blood

Title: Half-Blood

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Publication Date: Oct 18, 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself
Summary from Goodreads:
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure-bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she’s crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn’t her biggest problem–staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

My Thoughts:
When I started reading the story I was instantly drawn into the action that was going on right from the start of the book. I also really enjoyed that pieces of Alex’s world were slowly reveiled to the reader, yet in a way that made the world still make sense. Many times lately authors are leaving their worlds very undeveloped and unexplained. I felt that I liked the way the book was laid out. However, as I got a little more into the story I was shocked to realize that the story is something very close to a popular adult romance series. This series is called The Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Many of the creatures are named the same and have similar backgrounds. It took me a little while to get over the fact that this seemed very much like the Dark Hunter world redone for teenagers.

Once I got over my Dark Hunter look a like shock I was able to really enjoy the story that was laid out. It is easy for the reader to get caught up in the mystery of the plot. The plot holds not only mysteries but romance, adventure, and greek mythology, which happens to be a favorite of mine. Plus I have one simple name for you ladies who love romance, Aiden! Whip out the fans because this man may come off as a closed off Pure in Alex’s Half-blood world but he is so much more. He is very much swoon-worthy and one of the better male characters, dare I say he might even make my top five male characters from YA novels. Moving away from Aiden’s great character, the reader will also find many great things about our leading heroine, Alex. She is strong, tough, fierce, yet has emotions just like any human being and she does break down a few times, which in my opinion just makes her that much more real. She was one of the best kick-ass heroines that I’ve found in a long time.

Overall, I really fell for all of the main and secondary characters in this novel. I found myself experiencing all of the emotions that the characters were feeling and they were the strong point for me the whole novel. When you are so wrapped up in the story that you are laughing and crying with the characters you know it is a great book. The storyline was a little predictable but I expect the story to continue in great ways in the second book which will come out next year. Overall, I say you should pick up a copy of Half-Blood when it releases. Due to the fact that the storyline wasn’t that original but the characters were fantastic I have to give this book 4.5 hearts.

City of Ashes

Title: City of Ashes
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Publication Date: March 2008
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Barnes and Noble:
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

My Thoughts:
After reading the first book in this series I was a little under-impressed. I thought City of Bones was good but I didn’t see anything awesome in it. I put off reading City of Ashes for a long time even though I’ve had it on my shelf for well over a year. I will say that this book caught my attention right from the beginning because we already knew all of the characters and the back story. There was a ton of action non-stop and of course Clary, Jace and Simon are the three main characters and it was a little shocking that Simon finally stepped up for himself a bit more in this novel. Go Simon! Of course we also get to see Alec and his relationship with Magnus (I don’t have anything against gay relationships but I just never really thought these two worked together. I just always pictured Magnus as middle age so him dating an 18 year old is a little weird to me. I am happy for them though and maybe as time goes on I’ll start to think of Magnus as he is described which is about age 19.)

I really did enjoy the action and the direction of the storyline however, Valentine does remind me a bit of Lord Voldemort. There were parts of the storyline that reminded me of the days of Harry Potter except I still like Harry Potter a little bit more than The Mortal Instruments Series. I do appreciate the fact that MI has more romance than Harry Potter did though. I just wish this whole brother-sister thing would get resolved, which I know from spoilers from friends that it does but I guess I just have to read City of Glass in order to see that. I also interested in seeing what everyone got cut off from talking about in City of Ashes, which is exactly why Jace and Clary have extra powers and just who their parents really are!

Overall, the storyline and characters drew me back into the storyline. I like seeing all of the different creatures coming together in one story and the Shadowhunters are interesting in themselves. Like I said this reminded me a little of Harry Potter with the way the book is set up. Plus the Inquisitor reminded me of Umbridge from the fifth Harry book since I just loved to hate her for what she was doing. Basically overall I’m interested in this series, do I think it is the best/most amazing that I have come across, no but I do still enjoy it to an extent. Since I thought this one was better than City of Bones I’m going to give this book 4.5 hearts but I don’t think these books will ever get 5 hearts from me. They just fall a little short of amazing me.

The day is here.. My blog is one year old.
It has been a long road but a happy one to get to the big mile marker of one year of blogging.
I’m so happy to still be blogging one year later and I’m thankful for all of the people who follow and read what I have to say. I never imagined I would have close to 600 followers in just one year. I was excited back when I gained those first few followers and I still get excited over a new reader. I love reading comments and finding new blogs and keeping up with as many blogs and bloggers as I can.

In just one year I have gone from reading only YA and Adult Romance to branching out to read sci-fi or urban fantasy, starting my manga collection, and just now I’ve been looking into middle grade novels. Why I never tried these books before is beyond me. Thank you so much to all the bloggers out there that have written reviews for books because you have made my tbr pile grow from 75 books to well over 300. My shelves thank you, my wallet is a different story. :)
I shall stop rambling and get to the giveaway!

Birthday + Blogoversary Bash: Why I Started Blogging

Photobucket

Over a year ago I found out about book blogs. So I started to slowly follow some blogs that I was running across. I was excited about all of the books that the bloggers were posting and the awesome giveaways that they had going on for said books. I’ll admit I was a bit of a contest junkie when I first started to follow blogs. After spending all summer reading several blogs I decided that I could handle running a blog. Yes, even with my huge course load for my nuclear medicine degree and my 25+ hour a week job, I decided I had time.

So I chatted the concept of a blog over with my best friend, Johnny. This was before he turned into my boyfriend, if anyone cares to know. So he thought the blog was a great idea considering the fact that I love reading and I was constantly talking with him about the stories in the books I was reading. Since I could always tell Johnny about my books why wouldn’t I be able to share my opinion with the rest of the blogging world. So I decided to start brainstorming names for the blog. Trust me I went through a lot of them and tried to make sure that my blog name wasn’t the same as some other blog.

One day while throwing out names on the phone with Johnny we decided on Pages of Forbidden Love. I decided on that name because forbidden love is very popular in not only the teen book world but in the adult romance world as well. I mean who doesn’t want to fall in love with a man/guy who you are forbidden to see. It is a classic story element, it has been a little overdone throughout time but it will always be something that draws people in. You just have to love the couple that is willing to battle feuding families, angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, etc. in order to be together.

So the blog was born and even though there have been times where I thought about giving up due to everything I do, I have stuck with it this far. So hopefully the blogging world will continue to have Pages of Forbidden Love around, especially now that I’ve enlisted the help of my co-blogger, Johnny. :)

Thanks for reading the story!
