Fairy Blues

Title: Fairy Blues
Author: J.L. Bryan
Publisher: Self Published
Publication Date: Jan 2012
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: None

Summary from Goodreads:

The sequel to Fairy Metal Thunder.

With their enchanted instruments charming the crowds, the Assorted Zebras attract interest from record producers, and soon they’re off to cut their first album and music video. Jason and his friends don’t know they’ve just become pawns in a sinister plot by a cabal of evil fairies…

Meanwhile, Aoide and her band pursue a new strategy for regaining their stolen instruments, one that will take them into the most haunted region in Faerie.

My Thoughts:

First off aren’t the new covers for this series just beyond amazing! I think this is the cover choice that Jeff needs to stick with because it isn’t going to get any better than this! Moving on to the story and review…

At the end of Fairy Metal Thunder I knew I had to continue this story. However, at that point I felt the story was focused very heavily on Jason and his band members of The Assorted Zebras! Don’t get me wrong I really love Jason and it is so funny and cute to watch him as he grows up in Fairy Blues, but I wanted to see more of the fairy world. So Jeff made me beyond happy when he included more of Aoide’s story, who is the main fairy that Jason stole the instuments from, in this book.

With more of a glimpse into the fairy world I felt I finally got to see inside of Jeff’s head as he crafted this world. Seriously, being in the fairy world is like being thrust into Alice’s world in Wonderland. I swear after this trippy journey through Jeff’s vision I’m not sure I should ever go back but how can I stay away from this awesome place where gumdrops grow on trees, pumpkin patches come to life, and unicorns grow from dropping their horns into a pond! In the words of Ashley (The Bookish Brunette), can we say EPIC WIN!

Since I am so obsessed with the fairy world and the fairy aspects of this novel I thought some of the human world parts were just a touch boring in the beginning of the book because the record contract just didn’t seem that interesting. The main thing that I like about visiting Jason and his friends is watching Jason slowly grow up and starts to learn some lessons along the way. For some reason a part that stands out to me personally is when the girl he is crushing on, Erin is not looking and he checks out her figure. I just feel so bad for this poor guy, he would treat Erin so well and she is with that loser Zach! *slams head into wall* All I have to say is I need these two to get together! The best part though about these two is that their little romance is really one of many sub-plots, that is right folks, it is not the main storyline to this book. Which is what I love best about Jeff’s writing, the romance is not the central focus, we get to see more than just that.

Overall, there are a lot of plots going on in this book so there is always something new to be reading about. Towards the end of the novel is when the human world aspect of the story becomes very interesting as all of the plots come together. It certainly was a great ending but it leaves me wanting to start book three in this series as soon as possible. I just need to find out if Jason somehow manages to get the girl while still watching Aoide try so hard to get to man world to get her instruments back so her band can make money again in the fairy world. Ultimately, what I’m telling you is that I need more! This story gets 4.5 hearts from me!

I know you can all read, since we are book readers, that the title of my Clock Rewinders post this week is Replacing the IMM Feature. I had actually been looking at Clock Rewinders posts for several weeks before the DRAMA happened! I was already thinking about switching over to this meme because I always want to do recap posts and spread the word about great blog posts I read all week long but I never am motivated to do this. So this feature allows me to get motivated to make this type of post happen. I do hope you enjoy the fact that I decided to make this switch for several personal reasons.

*Please note that the video this week does express our concern about the DRAMA and that it is easy to just link up a person instead of copy and pasting their posts. I’m not going to get into the DRAMA, I’m just going to say I’m no longer doing the IMM feature, our books received video will now be a part of Clock Rewinders, unless I hear from Amanda or Tara that this is not allowed. I simply feel that linking or giving credit is not hard to do, copy and pasting from someone else is wrong. No disrespect to The Story Siren is intended.*

Pages of Bookish Love: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie

Pages of Bookish Love is a new feature that Alexa (you are HERE) and I (Ashley, The Bookish Brunette) have concocted… Both of us will recommend a book to the other, then review said book on the other’s blog! I had Alexa read Anna Dressed in Blood and her review is posted over at my blog today! Alexa had me read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures #1)
by Jennifer Ashley

Published: 4/28/2009 by Leisure Books

From Goodreads:

The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family–rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn’t be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them–of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He’s also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama–an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

The first of a new historical series.

The Bookish Brunette thought:

I have a confession… an admission of sorts. I LOVE romance… more specifically- YA contemporary romance… erotic romance AND historical romance with lots of smexy goodness thrown in… that’s right, THE Zombie Queen herself- a complete sucker for a good, sappy love story!

I’ve wanted to read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie for MONTHS… but because of other reading obligations- I never did! *sigh* Having never have read anything by Jennifer Ashley before this, I was especially intrigued! A mad Lord? Bring it on baby!!

Lord Ian Mackenzie tries to warn the beautiful, widow Beth Ackerley away from the perversions of Sir Lyndon Mather and then almost immediately proposes they get married as a way for her to escape him. She is then almost certain that the rumors of Lord Ian’s madness are VERY true!

“You make no sense, my lord. If you don’t care about my fortune or whether I love you, why on earth do you wish to marry me?”

“Because I want to bed you.”

Beth knew in that instant that she was not a true lady, and never would be.

Right? My kinda chick dude!!! Come to find out, the rumors of Lyndon’s debauchery are entirely TRUE. Beth PROMPTLY breaks their engagement and rushes off to Paris… and Lord Ian follows her. Awww…

I will admit this book sort of dragged toward the middle for me, and it turns out there’s QUITE a scandal happening among the MacKenzie clan! Throw in a murder/mystery (which usually isn’t my thing…), Ian having spent so many years in the asylum for being INSANELY intelligent and a really sweet romance to top it all off! This may not have ended up being my FAVORITE historical romance, but it’s definitely a great read!

I cannot WAIT to read the next installment though! Ian’s brother, Mac was an extremely interesting character! Lady Isabella and Mac have been… “separated” for FAR too long! I’m simply dying to find out how he wins her back in Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage (Highland Pleasures, #2)!

Fifty Shades Darker

Title: Fifty Shades Darker
Author: E L James
Publisher: The Writer’s Coffee Shop Publishing
Publication Date: Sept 2011
Classification: Adult Romance Novel
Challenge: None

Content: Adult Erotic Scenes

Summary from Goodreads:

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her, and make the most important decision of her life.

My Thoughts:

This one starts off right were Fifty Shades of Grey ended, on a cliffhanger ending might I add! So Ana and our lovely Mr. Grey are not currently together and they are both just trying to live their life the best they can. Just a few days after Ana has left, Christian calls her and asks her to still go to her friend’s photo gallery with him. Since it is for her friend Ana agrees to go, never suspecting that Christian’s intent will be to win her back. This part of the book actually upset me quite a bit because I wanted Ana to really make Grey work to get her back, instead she just agrees to be back together with him rather quickly! Where the hell are the scenes where Grey has to show her ‘hearts and flowers’ in order to get her back! I wanted Grey to work for it after what he did in the first book.

I decided to put the book down for just a few days so that I could take a break. I didn’t want to keep reading when I was upset about the fact that Ana didn’t put up a battle. Once I picked the story back up I found my anger was gone and what do you know that Grey actually had a few more tricks, not those type of tricks, get your mind out of his kinky fuckery pocket! Grey was actually making an effort to change for Ana and this was the part of the novel that was the best. Yes, there was a side story to the plot about a stalker ex-sub of Grey’s but what I focused in on was Ana and Grey, it is always about them. The extras to the plot were really cool because it kept the story moving along but at the end of the day I just love the scenes with Ana and Grey. I really loved that Grey was able to start to change for Ana and that everything was slowly working out.

Overall, I don’t want to rant and rave for too long but as I just said the best part of this series so far has been watching Ana and Christian grow and change for the better and for each other. Grey is still who he is, because hello you couldn’t fully get rid of what makes him.. well the Grey we have all come to love, and I loved that he is still true to himself. Grey certainly improves and I do love that Ana was stronger in this novel, not giving in to every demand that Grey might have. I loved the scenes where we got to see how close these two could become. I loved the drama with Mrs. Robinson and I loved the moments where Grey made up for everything. So while I was upset when the novel started because I believed that he didn’t work hard enough for Ana I have to say that all changed by the end. This one gets 4.5 hearts from me for a great novel, I wouldn’t call it erotica and you can certainly see the Twilight moments if you look for them, but there is just something addictive about this series, this captivating couple.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Author: E L James
Publisher: The Writer’s Coffee Shop Publishing
Publication Date: May 2011
Classification: Adult Novel
Challenge: None

Content: Adult BDSM, acts of Dom/Submission

Summary from Goodreads:

When literature student Anastasia Steele is drafted to interview the successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey for her campus magazine, she finds him attractive, enigmatic and intimidating. Convinced their meeting went badly, she tries to put Grey out of her mind – until he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is shocked to realize she wants this man, and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her – but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a passionate, physical and daring affair, Ana learns more about her own dark desires, as well as the Christian Grey hidden away from public scrutiny.

Can their relationship transcend physical passion? Will Ana find it in herself to submit to the self-indulgent Master? And if she does, will she still love what she finds?

My Thoughts:

Everyone in the blogging world is talking about this one and during the first part of the buzz, long before Dr. Drew stuck is nose in something he knows nothing about, I purchased a copy of this book. Ever since Jan I have had one person or another hounding me to read this one. Well I kept putting it off for unknown reasons and now that I have finally gotten to this book I’m a little torn in my feelings for it. Let me explain….

First off I have the most respect for this genre, I have spent years reading adult romance and my first adventure into the genre was when I was 16. I didn’t pick up any old romance, nope I picked up Wicked Pleasure by Lora Leigh which has BDSM and that line between pleasure & pain, plus there is threesome scenes. So needless to say I started out with more erotic romance when I was younger so when I heard about Fifty I knew I had to read his steamy tale…or at least everyone told me it was steamy.

Well turns out that in the beginning of this book our leading man Christian Grey (aka Fifty) doesn’t just jump into such wicked activities with our leading lady, Anastasia Steele (aka Ana). Nope instead we sit around while he explains the lifestyle to her. This is where I checked out a little, I don’t need the BDSM lifestyle explained to me. I’ve read books that feature such relationships and if I needed more info I could have researched it myself. The beginning of the book felt like the author’s research on this topic was laid out for us to see. It ruined part of the passion for me because everything seemed a little too explained. I didn’t want to be told what was going on, I wanted to feel it! I dislike when books tell me the story, make me feel the story, make me feel like I’m right there with the characters. Often during the first half of this book I felt like the book was in a bubble and I was reading it through the bubble, reading it through a barrier and it wasn’t fun. (Wow I think I just made two sexual puns, without meaning to of course.)

I decided to pick the book back up after putting it down for two days due to the lack of connection. I mean I did love Ana’s character and I did have some feelings for Grey and their world but I needed more. Well I found that putting the story down for those two days really helped me to get back into it. I instantly felt that bubble go away and I could finally watch Grey and Ana be where I wanted them to be from the very beginning! I got to watch their intense relationship and passion of each other light up the pages. I finally wasn’t getting lectured on BDSM, it was about time Grey started to make it happen! This was where the book really shined for me, I finally got the connection that so many people were raving about.

Overall, the last 100ish pages can not make up for my dislike in the first part of the story but it does help to make me want to read book two. Yes, book one had editing problems and too often Grey and Ana played the name game going between all of their names so often that it left you feeling a little in  daze of feeling they should get over the use of their own names! I also felt a few portions were repeated and that might have been cleaned up in editing, my only hope is now that a big name publisher has picked this book up that editing time will be spent on this book in order to clean up some of the issues! So I have the most respect for this genre and I even feel like I have to say that this novel has been pretty tame when compared with other novels of it’s kind. Plus at the end of the day this is Twilight fanfiction and you can certainly see that at parts. However, by the time the explosive ending comes about I knew I had to at least try book two to find out what happens with these characters. As much as I didn’t connect with them in the beginning, is how much of a 180 this was at the end. So I have mixed feelings about this book but it gets 3.5 hearts from me.

Waiting on Wednesday (26)

This is a great weekly theme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine to show off the books that we are looking forward to that haven’t been released yet.

Summary:

When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email.

Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. At a downtown club, he disappears after several dances that leave her on fire. When he asks if he can sketch her, alone in her room, she agrees—hoping for more.

Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

Release Date:

May 25th 2012

Why I’m Waiting on it:

If you have never read a book by Tammara Webber then you really need to catch up on her first book Between the Lines and the sequels that follow. This is a new book though and it sounds just as awesome as everything she has already done. Plus Webber offers up great older teen stories and phew I swear they can get you hotter than some adult romance books can with the passion and connection Webber’s characters have. This is certainly going to be a book to be on the look out for, I know I can’t wait!

A Princess of Mars

Title: A Princess of Mars
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Publisher: Penguin Books
Publication Date: Jan 2007
Classification: Adult Fiction Novel

Summary from Goodreads:

The first published book by the creator of Tarzan of the Apes that introduced the world to intergalactic Civil War soldier, John Carter. Two years before Edgar Rice Burroughs became a worldwide celebrity with the publication of Tarzan of the Apes and its twenty-two sequels, which together have sold more than 30 million copies, he published the futuristic sci-fi romance, A Princess of Mars. A Princess of Mars tells the story of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who inexplicably finds himself held prisoner on the planet Mars by the Green Men of Thark. With Dejah Thoris, the princess of another clan on Mars, John Carter must fight for their freedom and save the entire planet from destruction as the life-sustaining Atmosphere Factory slowly grinds to a halt.A Princess of Mars is the first in Burroughs’ eleven book Barsoon series, following the continued adventures of John Carter.

My Thoughts:

What does one do if one wishes to have their words last a lifetime? WRITE IT DOWN! In the early 20th century, a new genre in literature was in its infancy and little did anyone realize that this certain genre would redefine books forever. Science Fiction is where the true dreams dwell and dare to go into the unknown. They use this world as an escape from reality and are able to stretch and even break the limits of this world as their world is limitless. When someone speaks to me of Science Fiction and its early beginnings, three names instantly come to mind; H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Edward Rice Burroughs. H.G. Wells is well known for penning ‘War of the Worlds’ and Jules Verne is probably to be considered the father of Science Fiction. His book ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ is one of if not the first Science Fiction tale. Both of these men were pioneers and helped to usher in this new genre into the limelight, but I have always been a fan of the obtuse and the offbeat. That might fit Edward Rice Burroughs to a T. He is probably most well known for ‘Tarzan; King of the Apes’, but it is his Martian Tales Saga that really seemed to cement his legacy, at least in this man’s opinion (Be honest– a man in a loincloth swinging from vine to vine, obsessed in a weird and perverse quasi sexual way about a woman named Jane OR a badass former Confederate soldier that gets mysteriously transported to Mars and falls in love with a gorgeous princess all while jumping around higher than an olympic pole vaulter. Who would you go for?)

Since this book was written many years ago, its writing style was vastly different than most other things I have read in a long time. It was not poetic ala Shakespeare but it was unique in its own way. For instance, the book was mostly exposition for a good thirty plus pages until there was actual signs of dialogue between characters. That is an impressive feat for two reasons: it shows the writers strength in being able to carry on a storyline without human interaction and it also signifies that he is able to develop the story in a unique brand. When the dialogue did occur, it was not ‘Oh hello Alexa. Do you wish to shake on it?’. It was instead very formal and regal. Prim and proper is perhaps the best way to describe the writing style of this novel. It was not written in a human context as I have yet to meet two people carry on a direct line of conversation  involving the words ‘hark’, ‘fear not dear maiden’, or ‘damn the gods for my eyes shan’t see no more beauty’ (ok so maybe those are not direct quotes from the book but I believe my point has been made).

Aside from my objection in regards to the writing style, I found the book itself to be teeming with life. It was chocked full of fresh characters (I WANT TO OWN WOOLA. Good puppy..creature…thing) and a glorious, arid alien world known as Barsoom (Mars to you plain folk). I could only imagine what Dejah Torhis looked like. Was she as radiant and decadent as John Carter made her out to be? Well thanks in large part to the movie, I found this to be true. She is a fox! She is no Alexa Kalas but she is still mighty fine ;) . The world of Barsoom was vibrant even if it is a dry land. It was rich and powerful in its scope and ERB made good use of his vivid depictions of the 4th rock from the Sun.  The story itself did seem to jump around at points, which I suppose would be another drawback of this book. I had a hard time focusing in on the actual storyline and instead focused in on the world around the characters and action. I am unsure if it was how the dialogue was permitted or if it was just the writing style itself but I did find myself rereading portions of passages and flipping back to figure out what exactly I might have missed.

In a brief side note, some of you might be aware that this novel was translated into a film ‘John Carter’. It spent many years in developmental hell and the end result was a bit lackluster at points. The story was vastly different from the book and only had glimmers of the actual source material. It might be considered a loose adaptation or instead it was inspired by this novel.  It turned out to be one of the biggest cinematic flops but then again, it was listed with a budget of a quarter of a billion dollars. It would have had to pull out huge numbers just to cover its costs before even thinking about turning a profit. Check the film out and let me know what you think.

All in all, the book was not a homerun for me nor was it a flop. It was decent. Like I previously stated, I fell in love with world and not so much the storyline. I will give the second chapter a shot though. Might as well. It came in a bind up :) .

Destined

Title: Destined
Author: Aprilynne Pike
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: May 2012
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: YA/MG Fantasy challenge

Summary from Goodreads:

Laurel now knows the truth: Yuki is a rare Winter faerie, the most powerful—and deadly—of all, and she is working with Klea to conquer and destroy Avalon. With Tamani, David, and Chelsea by her side, Laurel prepares for a fight she never thought she would have to face.

Filled with heart-pounding action, sweeping romance, and higher stakes at every turn, Destined is the series conclusion that readers have been clamoring for—with a twist that will leave them breathless.

Tamani looked at her gravely, and reached up to touch her hair behind her ear. He hesitated for an instant, then his hands found the sides of her face, pulling her to him. He didn’t kiss her, just held her face to his, their foreheads resting together, their noses almost touching.

She hated how much it felt like good-bye.

My Thoughts:

I have fallen in love with this series gradually over the course of the first three books. Now I knew that Destined would be the last book and I was already heartbroken before I even read the story. I knew I loved all of our main characters and that although I knew who I liked of the love triangle that I liked the other guy just as much! I knew this was going to be a hard book to read because I just love Avalon, the characters, and the unique elements of the fae. Plus lets face it my track record with the final book in any series has not been good. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was Deathly Boring, Bloodrose ruined everything I believed the characters stood for, and Mockingjay..well lets not even go there. However, you can see that final books are often difficult, to me it has not been lack of love for the characters it just always seems the the author writes something that upsets me or doesn’t live up to what I want. Well all of those can be moved aside because Pike did not even come close to letting me down!

This book was a rush from the first page as the cliffhanger from Illusions is fully explored in the beginning of this book. From here on out there is little time for the characters to sit and rest because there is just an epic battle happening. Of course the battle has always been about Avalon so our lovely characters end up there, which I love! I loved Spells because I finally got to see Avalon and experience everything that world has to offer and I can’t even fully explain my happiness of returning there in Destined! Of course I knew our characters would be back there because Pike told me that Avalon was a big part in book four after me telling her at many book signings that I needed more Avalon!

Aside from Avalon the characters are wonderful. Life just would not be the same without Laurel, Tamani, David and Chelsea. In this book we certainly see all four of them rise to the occasion and really fight for what they believe in. They fight for what is right even if that goes slightly against who they are as a character. I loved watching these four grow and change for the better during all the books and Destined just cemented my belief in all four of them. I know that even though this series is now over that I will one day need to re-read the entire series because these special characters are never going to leave my heart.

Overall, I hope I did not give too much of the plot away, tried to steer clear of that since this is the final book in a series that you may or may not have read. If you are among the readers who has not yet ventured into Avalon to find the fae then I simply say what on Earth are you waiting for?! Pike delivers at every turn and this is certainly not a series you will regret spending time with. At the end of the final pages of this book I knew I was in love and that Pike brought something special to the table. She changed my belief in teen books having no real end goal with her final pages taken from the point of view of one special character. Yes, folks I did cry because it was sad to see but also fitting and beautiful. Now all I have to do is sit impatiently waiting to gobble up Pike’s newest book which I have heard is suppose to be about reincarnation and lovers who belong together, could be entirely wrong so don’t quote me. Sounds EPIC. Oh and 5 hearts for me, as if you couldn’t figure that out!
