Summary from Goodreads:
There was something seriously wrong with Marty. That was the only explanation that she could come up with. Why else would she feel this way for the biggest SOB in town? Granted, he was also the hottest man in town, but he was also arrogant, callous, and determined to drive her away even as he drove her crazy with his touch. She should just walk away from him and probably would if it wasn’t for this connection that she’d always had with him that kept making her want more with the one man that couldn’t give her anything more than heartache.
He should have left and never looked back when he’d decided to finally do the right thing and push Marty out of his life, but instead he stuck around to torture himself by staying close to the one woman that he could never allow himself to have. She deserved better than him, better than the tortured existence that he led and better than the horrifying future that waited for him.
Well, first and foremost, if you’ve ever read any of Ms. Mathewson’s books, then (if you’re like me) go into this one thinking you might have an idea of how it’s going to go… NOT!! This is way different, more out there, and busting at the seams of pure, untouched substance!! It’s very hard to put in plain words, but this has become my favorite book by her. I saw some reviews kinda knocking it for it some of the contents not being that reviewer’s forte… well, don’t give a bad review for that. The storyline itself is magnificent and fantastically written. Uber sexy, plenty chilling, and jam packed with so many possibilities for future installments. There are some very dark and dank subject lines, and at times I felt very helpless and desperate to intervene. Thank God it didn’t always stay that way.. I’ll admit to laughing out loud at least two hundred times or so!!! Pink Bunnies.. LOL… however it definitely is NOT a light-hearted read! It was very pleasant to read something that wasn’t about a Billionaire, Tycoon, or Heiress! These are REAL down to earth (sort of) people, with everyday jobs, and everyday (sort of) lives!
Tristan is all alpha male, all hunky madness, and a beautiful mess. What destitution that boy went through at such a young age. So glad he had Shayne to guide him, help him, and be there every step of the way! The banter involving those two was the cause of most of my laughing out loud half the time! Now Marty, well, Ms. Mathewson did a superb job of writing the ideal heroine. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cringed when finding out my heroine was some deprived, powerless, crybaby! Marty was the complete opposite. She’s smart, beautiful, educated, strong, and has so much tenacity. Tristan was truly getting on my last damn nerve at his treatment of Marty in the beginning… whaddanasshole… thank goodness he turned it around, I was pretty sure Marty was seconds away from a major ball shot with him! The supporting characters were some of the best in the business. There are too many to mention, but I will say this, Shayne is my favorite by far. Big, handsome, giant heart, and the hottest, greenest eyes in the entire book world!
The story of Tristan and Marty was effortless to read and flowed very nicely. I never had the urge to skip around or put it down for that matter. There is absolutely NO clunky parts or fillers, just plain old beautiful writing. It’s 418 (Kindle Version) pages long and took me around 2 days to read. Just about right, I’d have to say. On a personal note: RL, I just wanted to say, I was in a horrible marriage too. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get out of it with myself and my son intact and be able to support us. Thanks to the help of my parents and sister and of course some friends, I got out! Before I read that in the beginning of Black Heart I already had so much respect for you, now the respect is through the roof! Your babies are lucky to have you for their Mommy!! You rock sista!!!
